Simone (the protagonist) is dressed in black for the entire film, in contrast to her peers who wears colors. This isolates Simone in not just the physical appearance, but also in her thinking, a black sheep.

Simone also wants her portrait to be perfect. This one photo will be her high school legacy. Hence, compared to her friends who dress a little more casual with more accessories, Simone chooses to present herself is a more elegant way through her clothes’ silhouettes and accessories choice.

Poster Design Direction

The poster was designed with the intention of story telling in mind. It has to give the context to the movie’s main conflict indirectly.

Since the characters are shown to be in their High School photo day in the film, the poster features an open yearbook, showing our characters’ smiling in their photos neatly, except Simone’s where there’s a crossed line on her eyes, foreshadowing her fate in the film.

We were inspired by 80s horror movie poster and Stephen Kings book covers. The title lockup were inspired in the same style, familiar and yet evokes an unsettling feeling.

Thoughts

Working for a short film project feels very different to what I was used to beforehand: long hours on set, a lot of organization for the costume, yet designing process was all so fun!

Brainstorming and executing the costume design for this film brought me back closer to fashion, which was my background before graphic design. Designing the poster for this film really challenged me to think differently as well. Rather than it being a decorative representation of the film, the director and I wanted it to function as part of the story and gives audience context.

100% would work for a film project again.
